Let’s face it—life isn’t always easy. Every day presents new challenges, some expected and others completely out of left field. The truth is, we can’t always control what happens, but we can control how we respond—and that starts with managing our thoughts.
Negative self-talk can be our worst enemy, holding us back from making progress. The good news? You don’t have to listen to that voice. Here are three ways to quiet the noise, regain focus, and take action.

1. Breathe.
When negativity creeps in and you start feeling overwhelmed, stop and breathe. Breathing is the most fundamental, primal act we have—and it’s always within our control. Focusing on your breath slows your heart rate, calms your nervous system, and brings clarity when everything feels chaotic. The next time frustration, doubt, or stress takes over, take a deep breath, reset, and move forward.
2. Acknowledge It.
You’re not going to silence negative thoughts by ignoring them. Instead, acknowledge them, recognize their presence, and then take control. When doubt creeps in, pause and call it out: “I hear you, but you don’t get to run the show.”Naming the thought allows you to separate from it, rather than being consumed by it. Reminds me of a Haiku:
Dig deep now. Dark. Low.
Find your fear there. Stare it down.
Give it a doughnut.
Address the fear. Own the moment. Move forward.
3. Identify the Root Cause.
Where is this negativity coming from? Fear? Self-doubt? Perfectionism? Take a step back and ask yourself: Why am I letting this thought control me? Once you identify its source, you can choose your response. Some doubts you’ll challenge and overcome. Others, you’ll recognize as useless and let go. Either way, you’re back in control.
